I’ve been running email marketing campaigns for years now. WordPress emails are super important to my business success.
They help me stay connected with customers and send important updates. Plus, I use them for contact forms and WooCommerce notifications that keep my business running smoothly.
But here’s the thing – WordPress email delivery can be a real headache.
Messages end up in spam folders or just disappear completely. The default PHP mail function is unreliable at best.
On top of that, setting up proper DNS records, SPF authentication, and DKIM signing feels like rocket science sometimes. I wanted something simple that wouldn’t confuse me or my clients.
Since I already use SendLayer for my main email campaigns and WP Mail SMTP for some client sites, I got excited when this same company introduced Easy WP SMTP.
My biggest issue with WP Mail SMTP is that it can be pretty complicated for my smaller clients. The interface has tons of options that overwhelm beginners.
So when they launched Easy WP SMTP with the tagline “the simplest SMTP plugin,” I had to test it myself.
In this review, I’ll share exactly what I discovered during my hands-on testing.
I’ll show you if Easy WP SMTP really lives up to its “simple” promise. Plus, I’ll walk you through the setup process and help you decide if this plugin is worth your time and money.
Key Points You’ll Learn
- Setup time – How long it really takes to get emails working (spoiler: it’s fast)
- Best features – The tools that actually make a difference for email delivery
- Pricing breakdown – Whether the cost matches the value you get
- Who should avoid it – When other SMTP plugins work better
- Final verdict – My honest recommendation after testing everything
How We Test WordPress SMTP Plugins for Email Delivery
I don’t just install plugins and call it a day. My testing process involves real websites with actual traffic and customers.
Here’s exactly how I put each SMTP plugin through its paces to give you honest, reliable recommendations.
- Real-world testing environment – I set up test sites that mirror typical small business scenarios with contact forms, WooCommerce stores, and membership sites
- Multiple email provider testing – I send test emails to Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, and other popular email providers to check deliverability
- Spam folder monitoring – I use deliverability testing tools to see if emails land in inboxes or get flagged as spam
- Setup time tracking – I time the entire installation process from start to finish, noting any confusing steps
- Beginner perspective evaluation – I test everything from a non-technical user’s viewpoint because that’s who needs the most help
- Multi-day monitoring – I track bounce rates, delivery speeds, and success rates over several days for consistent results
This thorough approach helps me spot real problems that other reviewers miss. Plus, it gives you confidence that my recommendations work in the real world.

Easy WP SMTP Overview: What Does This Plugin Actually Do?

Easy WP SMTP is a WordPress plugin built to fix your email delivery headaches.
Instead of relying on your web server’s unreliable mail system, it routes emails through SMTP services and professional email platforms.
This simple change prevents your WordPress emails from landing in spam folders or disappearing completely.
This premium and free SMTP plugin works by bypassing WordPress’s default wp_mail() function, which often fails on shared hosting.
On top of that, it connects to over 8 transactional email providers like SendLayer, Gmail, and Mailgun.
The best part is that it supports custom SMTP servers if you prefer that route. So, if your SMTP service is not listed, you can still use it.
As mentioned, SendLayer’s team created this plugin as a simpler alternative to their other product, WP Mail SMTP.
While both plugins come from the same company, Easy WP SMTP focuses purely on simplicity. T
The company boldly claims it’s “The Simplest SMTP Plugin for WordPress” – a promise I’ll test throughout this review.
This plugin targets specific WordPress users who struggle with email problems. For example:
- Small business owners need a reliable email without technical complexity.
- WordPress beginners want a straightforward setup without confusing options.
- E-commerce store owners running WooCommerce need order confirmations to reach customers.
- Plus, anyone dealing with contact form emails going to spam will find this useful.
The core problems Easy WP SMTP solves include:
- Contact form messages disappearing
- WooCommerce emails failing to send
- PHP mail function limitations on poorly configured hosting
It also handles authentication issues and general WordPress hosting email problems that frustrate site owners daily.
Easy WP SMTP Review: Everything I Found Out
Now that you have a better understanding of what Easy WP SMTP is, let us get into the review. I have broken it down into several sections to make it easier for you to go through.
If you want to skip to any section, simply select one of the links below.
Easy WP SMTP Installation: Free vs Premium Setup
Before you start installation, there are a few things you need to have ready.
- You’ll need an email provider account like SendLayer or Gmail.
- Plus, make sure you have your API key or authentication credentials from that provider.
- Domain authorization with your chosen email service is also important for proper setup.
Optional items that help include:
With that out of the way, you should be all set to set up Easy WP SMTP.
Now, this SMTP plugin offers both a free and a premium version. This is perfect for anyone who wants to test out its features before committing to the paid version.
For this review, I will focus on Easy WP SMTP Pro so I can show you everything it can do.
But if you want to install the free version, all you have to do is head to your WordPress Dashboard and select Plugins » Add New.
Then, on the plugin page, search for “Easy WP SMTP” and click Install Now, followed by “Activate.”

Once you hit Activate, the plugin automatically launches its Setup Wizard. Total installation time is just 2-3 minutes.
As you can see, installing the free version of Easy WP SMTP is super easy. Does this ease of installation also apply to the pro version?
Step 1: Download Easy WP SMTP Pro
First, you need to purchase an Easy WP SMTP plan on their official site. They offer 4 plans, ensuring that you find one that meets your needs and budget.
Once you are done, open a new browser tab, log in to your Easy WP SMTP account, and look for the Downloads tab.
On this page, select Download Easy WP SMTP to download the zip file of the premium plugin directly to your computer.
While on this page, also copy the License Key; you will need it later to activate the pro version.

Let’s move to your WordPress dashboard, where we’ll set up the plugin properly.
Step 2: Install Easy WP SMTP Pro in WordPress
So to get started, head to your WordPress admin area and navigate to Plugins » Add New and select the “Upload Plugin” button at the top of the page and click it.
On this page, drop your Easy WP SMTP file to upload it to your WordPress. Then install and activate it like you would any other plugin.
If you face any issues, check out this article on how to install a WordPress plugin.
That’s it! Easy WP SMTP Pro is now installed and ready for configuration. The real magic happens in the setup process, which we’ll tackle next.
Step 3: Launch the Setup Wizard
After activation, Easy WP SMTP automatically takes you to its settings page. Look for the Setup Wizard option in the Easy WP SMTP menu, or click the “Setup Wizard” link that appears.
This guided process handles everything from start to finish.
Hit “Let’s Get Started” to begin the configuration process. The wizard walks you through each step without requiring any technical knowledge.
I should point out that all the settings you set up below can be implemented independently, but the setup wizard makes it super simple and ensures that you do not forget anything.

On the first setup wizard page, you will see 12+ email provider options that you can select with a checkbox. As expected, SendLayer gets recommended since it’s made by the same team.
You’ll also see Gmail/Google Workspace, Amazon SES, Mailgun, Mailjet, SendGrid, Brevo, SMTP.com, Postmark, SparkPost, SMTP2GO, Elastic Email, and Zoho Mail.
I already discussed how to use Outlook with WP SMTP in another tutorial you can check out. While I looked at setting up Brevo in the WP Mail SMTP Review.
So this time, I will use Mailgun for this example. If you choose “Other SMTP,” you’ll enter traditional SMTP server details like host, port, and authentication credentials.
Once you select the SMTP Mailer you want to use, hit “Next” to go to the next page of the wizard.

On the next page, enter your Domain Name and mailer API. In this case, I entered the Mailgun API in the text bar provided.

Next, set up your specific email provider details. Enter the “From Name” field; if left blank, it defaults to your website name, but you can change it later.
Use the “Force From Name” toggle button to ensure all outgoing emails use the From Name you have set up.
Below this, enter your From Email and use the toggle button to ensure all outgoing emails use the email address.

Next, use the checkboxes to enable features like Improved Email Deliverability and Email Error Tracking. These basic features work great for most users.
You can also use the checkboxes to enable advanced features like Detailed Email Logs, Complete Email Reports, Weekly Email Summary, and Instant Email Alerts.

These advanced options help you monitor and troubleshoot your email system more effectively.
Then, on the next setup wizard screen, enter the License Key you copied earlier from your Easy WP SMTP dashboard. Once done, hit Verify License Key.

And just like that, you have installed, activated, and set up Easy WP SMTP with its wizard.
If everything connects correctly, you’ll see a success message saying “Congrats, you’ve successfully set up Easy WP SMTP!”

But how do you know this SMTP plugin is actually working?
You can simply hit the Send a Test Email button on the last page of the setup wizard. Or, go to Easy WP SMTP » Send a Test which will land you on the same page.
On this page, enter the email address you want to receive the test email on and select “Send Test Email.”

Now, go to your mailbox and look for an email labeled Easy WP SMTP Automatic Email Test. Seeing it confirms that the setup was successful.

If you do not see it, you should see an error in WordPress like “Whoops, looks like something isn’t configured quite right.” At this point, you can troubleshoot the issue, then retest once done.

That is it! You can now set up Easy WP SMTP and test if it is working correctly. The total time it takes to set up this SMTP plugin is 5 minutes, living up to its tagline of the easiest SMTP to use.
Let us see if it is just as easy to customize.
Customizing Easy WP SMTP for Your Needs
Once you’ve got Easy WP SMTP installed, the real power comes from customizing it to match your specific setup.
I quickly noticed that the SMTP plugin offers way more flexibility than most users realize.
For example, you can manage multiple email providers, set up backup connections, and configure advanced routing rules that automatically send different types of emails through different services.
The mailer management system lets you choose between 12+ email providers or use your own custom SMTP server. Plus, you can configure multiple connections through the “Additional Connections” tab.

This means you could send marketing emails through one service and transactional emails through another.
For WordPress multisite networks, Easy WP SMTP includes centralized management for all subsites. You control everything from one dashboard instead of configuring each site separately.

Let us look at the Easy WP SMTP customization options in detail.
SMTP Server Settings and Authentication
The basic configuration options give you complete control over how your emails appear and function.
As mentioned, you can set your From Email Address and use the Force From Email toggle to override other plugins that try to change it.
But even after you set this up with the wizard, you can still change it at any time with additional options.
For example, the “Reply-To” email address lets you send emails from one address but have replies go to another.

This helps when you’re sending from a no-reply address but want responses to reach your support team.
BCC email address capability automatically copies someone on every email your site sends. Plus, Return Path settings help you handle bounced messages properly.
Customize Unlisted SMTP Service
If you choose the “Other SMTP” option for custom servers, you’ll see additional settings. SMTP Host configuration lets you enter your mail server details.
For this option, port selection includes the most common options: 25, 465, 587, and 2525.
The Authentication toggle and credentials section secures your connection. Auto TLS configuration automatically encrypts your emails for better security.

Now that you know how to customize Easy WP SMTP, let us see how easy it is to use.
How Easy Is Easy WP SMTP to Use?
As you can see above, the interface feels familiar to anyone who’s used WordPress before. Plus, the learning curve is gentle enough that even complete beginners can get emails working in minutes.
The real test of any plugin’s usability comes down to two things.
Can a WordPress beginner set it up without getting confused? Can an advanced user access the features they need without jumping through hoops?
Easy WP SMTP manages to satisfy both groups, though it leans heavily toward simplicity.
The user interface design follows WordPress’s native styling perfectly. Everything looks like it belongs in your WordPress admin area.
The layout stays minimal and uncluttered, focusing on essential functions rather than flashy graphics.
The design works great on different screen sizes too. Plus, there’s a Compact Mode option that condenses the navigation under WordPress Settings if you prefer a cleaner admin menu.
The navigation structure makes logical sense from the moment you first open the plugin.
Settings contain your primary configuration with Mailer and General Settings sections clearly separated. Email Test gives you a dedicated tab for sending test emails whenever you need to verify things work.
Email Logs lets you view your sent email history, though this is a Pro feature. The Tools section handles export functions, scheduled actions, and debug events.
So after testing the navigation and layout, I can confirm that Easy WP SMTP makes it easy to find.
Next, let us look at its actual features.
Easy WP SMTP Features
Easy WP SMTP really shines when it comes to helping WordPress newcomers.
As you have seen above, its features are easy to find, but now we will look at whether the features are easy to use.
Email Routing and Backup Connections
Smart Email Routing is one of my favorite features. You can create conditional logic based on subject content, From/To addresses, message body, or even which source plugin sent the email.

Custom rules support AND/OR operators for complex routing scenarios. And the best part is, you can set up multiple routing rules that work together.

For additional safety, the system automatically falls back to your primary connection for emails that don’t match any specific rules.
It detects when your primary email provider fails and seamlessly switches to your backup provider. As a result, there’s no downtime during outages because the system automatically retries failed emails.

Apart from that, you can configure multiple backup connections for extra reliability. Best of all, zero manual intervention is required – everything happens automatically.
Diverse Notification Options
Easy WP SMTP’s alert system keeps you informed when email problems occur. This Multi-Channel Failure Alerts work through SMS via Twilio, Email, Slack, Microsoft Teams, Discord, and Custom Webhooks.
You can configure different alert recipients for different types of problems. Real-time failure detection means you know about issues immediately instead of discovering them days later.

Automated and Manual Reporting
As your business grows, reporting becomes one of the most important things. Easy WP SMTP provides weekly Summary Options that create automated reports about your email performance.
These weekly email reports include:
- Open and click-through rates for emails that support tracking.
- Subject line performance analytics help you understand what email titles work best.
- Engagement rate tracking by campaign type shows how different email categories perform.
- Sent and failed email analysis and troubleshooting data help you fix delivery problems.
Apart from that, I like how the dashboard widget gives you at-a-glance stats whenever you log into WordPress.

Email Logging and Tracking
A feature that works well with the reporting feature is email logging. You get a complete email archive with searchable history that lets you track every message your site sends.

Apart from that, delivery status tracking shows you which emails went through successfully and which failed.
The log access features make finding specific emails super easy. You can view the complete history of sent emails with filtering by date range, search terms, or other criteria.

I like how email content gets preserved with attachments, so you can see exactly what was sent.

While individual email details include everything: subject, sender, recipients, content, headers, and delivery status. Apart from that, open and click tracking data show recipient engagement.
The plugin that sent the email is also identified. This tells you whether the email came from a contact form, WooCommerce, or another plugin.
On top of that, bulk operations let you resend, export, or delete multiple emails at once.
Import/Export and Migration
Import functionality makes switching to Easy WP SMTP painless. This is because the one-click migration works from WP Mail SMTP, FluentSMTP, and other major SMTP plugins.
To make the process even simpler, the Setup Wizard automatically detects existing configurations during installation. While the settings preservation during migrations means you don’t lose your current email setup.
You can also export email logs in CSV, EML, and Excel formats for external analysis. This allows you to store or analyze your email data on a third-party platform.

Provider Integrations and Compatibility
Easy WP SMTP supports an impressive range of email providers. The free version includes:
- SendLayer
- Brevo (300 emails/day)
- Mailgun, Mailjet (6,000/month)
- SendGrid (100/day), SMTP.com
- Postmark
- SparkPost
- SMTP2GO
- Elastic Email
- Zoho Mail

I was impressed by how many mailer options I could use on the free version of Easy WP SMTP. Plus, each provider comes with clear setup instructions and reasonable free tier limits for testing.
Premium-only integrations include everything in the free version plus the most popular business email services.
- Gmail and Google Workspace with one-click OAuth setup that eliminates complex configuration.
- Amazon SES integration provides enterprise-level email delivery.
- Microsoft 365 and Outlook support covers most corporate email setups.
The best part about using the pro version is the one-click setup for many of the mailer options like Sendlayer, Outlook, Gmail, and more.

Now that we have looked at the top features of Easy WP SMTP, let us quickly go through some of the supporting features.
- Security and Encryption: Security features focus on protecting your email credentials and connections.
- For example, AES-256 password encryption secures your API keys and authentication details in the database.
- Apart from that, the “allow insecure SSL certificates” option helps with servers that have certificate issues.
- Plus, connection timeout settings prevent hanging connections that could slow down your site.
- And of course, SMTP authentication is required for all popular email providers to ensure secure sending.
- Easy Domain Verification: Domain verification includes built-in domain check functionality to ensure proper setup.
- Encryption options cover SSL/TLS, STARTTLS, or no encryption, depending on your server requirements.
- Debug events provide failed email attempt logging with detailed error information for troubleshooting.
- Performance Settings: Performance settings include connection timeout controls, SMTP AutoTLS configuration, and rate limiting to stay within provider limits.
- Apart from that, background processing uses Action Scheduler for queue management. This prevents email sending from slowing down your website.
Documentation and Support
Support quality can make or break your experience with any WordPress plugin. I’ve tested Easy WP SMTP’s documentation and support channels extensively across multiple client projects.
Some aspects exceed expectations while others fall short of what competing plugins offer.
But at the end of the day, the overall support experience is more focused on helping users succeed rather than just answering questions.
This approach works especially well for beginners who need guidance beyond basic troubleshooting. Let me walk you through what you can actually expect when you need help.
Let me show you what I mean.
Documentation
The documentation provides comprehensive step-by-step guides that actually make sense. I’ve referred clients to these guides multiple times, and they consistently find answers without getting confused.
The writing style matches the plugin’s simplicity focus – no unnecessary technical jargon that overwhelms beginners.
One area that many SMTP plugin documentation fails on is provider-specific guides. But with Easy WP SMTP, they cover every supported email service.
As a result, you’ll find individual documentation for SendLayer, Amazon SES, Gmail, Mailgun, Microsoft 365, SendGrid, SMTP.com, Brevo, Postmark, SparkPost, and SMTP2GO.
Each guide includes screenshots and specific configuration steps for that particular service.

Support Channels and Response Times
Available support channels vary depending on your version.
Free users get access to the WordPress.org community forum, where other users and team members answer questions.
Plus, the comprehensive FAQ section and knowledge base resources help everyone find answers to common questions.
On the other hand, premium customers can use the contact form support on the official website.

The support team goes beyond typical email responses when needed. They provide Zoom calls for complex setup issues that require screen sharing or detailed explanation.
This personal touch makes a huge difference when you’re dealing with DNS configuration or complex email routing problems.
Easy WP SMTP Pricing
Easy WP SMTP’s pricing follows a straightforward approach that scales with your needs. The free version handles basic email sending perfectly for small sites.
When you’re ready to upgrade for advanced features like detailed logging, backup connections, and premium support, you have several options that provide good value for different user types.
When you’re ready to upgrade, these are your options:
- Basic Plan starts from $49.50 per year for -1 site – Email logging, backup connections, Gmail one-click setup, smart routing, failure alerts, premium support

Easy WP SMTP Alternatives: Are There Better SMTP Plugins Available?
Before you commit to Easy WP SMTP, let’s look at the main SMTP alternatives. Each option serves different needs and budgets.
Apart from that, some offer more advanced features while others focus on simplicity. Here’s how the top competitors compare in real-world usage.
WP Mail SMTP: The Feature-Rich Alternative

WP Mail SMTP leads the market with 3+ million active installations and significantly more features than Easy WP SMTP.
The advanced analytics include heat maps, detailed performance reports, and comprehensive email tracking that Easy WP SMTP can’t match.
WP Mail SMTP also has better logging with attachment storage, more backup connections, and advanced smart routing.
The downside is increased complexity that can overwhelm beginners.

SMTP Mailer: The Simple Alternative

SMTP Mailer takes the opposite approach with basic SMTP configuration and universal compatibility.
You manually enter server details for any SMTP provider, which works great if you prefer complete control over settings. The interface stays simple with basic test functionality and reliable wp_mail() integration.
The trade-off is no pre-built provider integrations, advanced features, or premium upgrade path.
It’s perfect for users who want basic SMTP functionality without paying for features they won’t use. Updates and support are limited compared to commercial alternatives.

Brevo: The All-in-One Marketing Platform

Brevo goes beyond SMTP plugins by offering a complete marketing platform. You get email marketing, SMS campaigns, marketing automation, CRM integration, and landing page builders all in one service.
The WordPress SMTP functionality works well for transactional emails.
This option makes sense if you need marketing tools beyond basic email delivery. The learning curve is steeper, and pricing can add up quickly as you use more features.
It’s overkill for simple WordPress email sending, but valuable for comprehensive marketing operations.

How does Easy WP SMTP compare to WP Mail SMTP?
Easy WP SMTP focuses on simplicity, while WP Mail SMTP offers more advanced features. Both come from the same company but target different users. WP Mail SMTP provides advanced analytics and enterprise features but has a steeper learning curve and higher pricing.
Can Easy WP SMTP work with WooCommerce emails?
Yes, Easy WP SMTP works perfectly with all WooCommerce notifications, including order confirmations, shipping updates, and invoices. The plugin controls WordPress’s wp_mail() function, so any email sent through WordPress gets routed through your SMTP provider. I’ve tested this on multiple e-commerce sites with reliable results.
Does Easy WP SMTP work with all contact form plugins?
Absolutely! Easy WP SMTP works with virtually every WordPress contact form plugin, including Contact Form 7, WPForms, Gravity Forms, and Ninja Forms. It operates at the WordPress core level, handling emails from any plugin using standard WordPress email functions. I’ve tested it successfully with over 10 different contact form plugins.

Delivery reliability depends on your chosen email provider rather than the plugin. Easy WP SMTP routes emails to professional SMTP services with much better delivery rates than web servers. In my testing, delivery improved from 60% with default WordPress to over 95% with proper SMTP configuration.
Final Verdict: Is Easy WP SMTP Worth It in 2025?
